Coverage of the Cibicue Creek/Fort Apache conflict in The Arizona Star newspaper:
ON THE WARPATH
CAMP THOMAS, Sept.1--
"There has been great uneasiness in Apache County for the past two weeks
over rumors that the White Mountain Indians near the fort were excited and ready
to break out at any time. On the 15th, Gen. Willcox, commanding this department,
sent the available troops in the southern territory to assist in quelling any
disturbance of the Indians, who were reported to be excited by bad medicine
men, who promised to raise the dead warriors and clear out the whites."
"Tiffany, agent at San Carlos, reports that Indian runners have come in from the White Mountains with flying rumors of fighting near Fort Apache. One lieutenant and a number of soldiers are said to have been killed in a fight on Cebicu Creek."
