Surrender of Geronimo (1886)
Frustrated with life on the San Carlos reservation, Geronimo and a small band of Apaches went raiding settlements in southeast Arizona and Mexico. He first surrendered to General Crook in the spring of 1886, but changed his mind and escaped again. Because of this, Crook was replaced by General Miles, who sent thousands of U.S. soldiers and Apache scouts looking for Geronimo. He was finally found near the U.S.-Mexico border that summer and convinced to surrender for the last time by Lieutenant Charles Gatewood.
