Salt River Cave (1872)
Anglo-U.S. army soldiers with Indian scouts under General George Crook trapped a band of Apaches in a cave in the canyon wall. Thirty-seven Apaches were killed, and 20 were taken prisoner. This was the first major offensive by Crook after declaring all Apaches not on the San Carlos Reservation as "hostiles".
