Bascom Affair (1861)
A child was kidnapped and livestock stolen from a farm in southeast Arizona. Authorities blamed local Apache Indians and summoned their leader, Cochise to an army fort. The Apaches denied involvement in the kidnapping, but the acting commander, Lieutenant George Bascom, did not believe Cochise and detained him. Conflict ensued as Cochise escaped. Several Apaches and American soldiers were killed.
